Mixing Materials: Stone, Brick and Siding on One Facade
There’s a house going up right now on a new street in Cedar Park, just north of Austin, with limestone veneer running the whole front, brick wrapping the two flanking columns, and lap siding filling the gables. On paper that reads like a materials mess. In person it works, because whoever designed it followed a couple of rules that most mixed-material facades ignore.
I’m a residential designer who’s spent enough years drawing elevations around Cedar Park, Round Rock, and the rest of the Austin area to see the same mismatch happen over and over, and this is the question I field more than any other: can you combine stone, brick, and siding on one facade without it looking like the builder ran out of one material and started another? Yes — but only if you treat the facade as a composition instead of a leftover bin.
The 60-30-10 split that keeps three materials from fighting
Every facade I like has a clear hierarchy, not three co-equal materials competing for attention.
- Field material (~60%): the bulk of what you see — usually fiber cement lap siding on a Central Texas build.
- Support material (~30%): wraps the base and entry — this is where I put limestone or stone veneer.
- Accent material (10% or less): brick, reserved for a chimney or a pair of columns.
Give three materials equal weight and the eye has nowhere to rest — the house looks busy and cheap no matter how nice the individual products are. Flip the proportions the other way, brick everywhere with a token strip of stone, and the whole elevation reads heavy and dated. Proportion does more work than product selection ever will.
Where the materials meet is where it succeeds or fails
Transitions are what separate a designed facade from a slapped-together one, and there are two rules I don’t break.
First, change materials on inside corners or at a real architectural break — a column, a roofline, a change in wall plane — never in the flat middle of a wall, where the seam looks accidental. Second, heavy goes on the bottom. Stone and brick belong at grade, where they visually anchor the house; lighter siding goes up high. Put siding on the bottom and stone floating in a gable and the house looks like it’s standing on stilts.
The joint itself needs proper flashing and a clean reveal so water sheds out and not back into the wall assembly. Skip that detail and you get rot behind the siding within a few Texas storm seasons — I’ve opened up enough walls to know it’s not a maybe. Color and texture: pick a lane
Mixing three materials is already a lot of visual information, so I keep the palette down to one decision: warm or cool, for the whole facade. Cream limestone, buff brick, greige siding is a warm palette. Gray stone, charcoal brick, white trim is a cool one. Mixing warm brick with cool gray siding is the single most common way I see these facades go wrong.
Texture works the same way. Rough-split stone against smooth siding reads as good contrast. Rough stone, tumbled brick, and heavily grained siding all at once just reads as noise. When in doubt, let one material carry the texture story and keep the other two quiet. What it actually costs to do this right
Mixed-material facades cost more than a single cladding, because you’re paying for two or three trades plus the flashing details between them. As rough installed numbers in the Austin market:

My advice: spend the material budget on the 60% field and the 30% base, because that’s what people actually see, and let the 10% accent stay modest. Questions I hear on almost every job
How many materials should I put on one facade? Two is safe, three is the practical ceiling, and they should follow a rough 60-30-10 split — one field material, one supporting material, one small accent. Give three materials equal area and the facade looks busy and unplanned, full stop.
Where should stone or brick go versus siding? Heavy masonry goes low, at grade and around the entry, where it visually anchors the house. Lighter siding stays up high, in gables and upper stories. Reverse that and the house looks top-heavy and unstable.
Does mixing materials cost more than one cladding? Yes — you’re paying multiple trades plus the flashing and transition detailing between materials. Do I have to redo the whole facade, or can I just add a stone accent to what’s already there? If the existing siding is sound, a spot accent — stone at the entry, brick on an existing chimney — can work without a full tear-off, as long as you still respect the 60-30-10 proportions and land the new material on a real architectural break, not mid-span on a wall.
What about an older home — does this still apply to something like a 1930s house in a neighborhood like Hyde Park? The hierarchy rule doesn’t change, but older homes usually already have one dominant material — wood siding, brick, or stucco — that should stay the field. Add stone or brick sparingly, at the same architectural breaks, porch piers, a chimney, rather than introducing a third material across the whole front.
