Permeable Paving: Is It Right for Your Driveway?
Last summer a young couple over in Round Rock walked me around the side of their house to show me a river. That’s what they called it, anyway — a channel their gravel driveway had carved after one of those Central Texas gully-washers that dumps two inches of rain in twenty minutes. They’d been reading about permeable paving online and wanted to know if it was worth the money. Now, permeable driveways weren’t a thing when I started in this trade; back then we poured concrete and let the water go wherever it wanted. But I’ve laid enough of these systems over the last decade to give a straight answer, so sit down and let me tell you what I told them.

What’s actually holding the water under one of these drives
Folks hear “permeable” and picture something flimsy, like it’ll crumble under a truck. It won’t. A permeable paver system is a solid driving surface — the units themselves are the same tough concrete or clay pavers you’d use anywhere — but the joints between them get filled with small angular stone instead of sand, and the whole thing sits over a deep bed of open-graded crushed rock instead of the packed base you’d use under regular pavers. Rain falls, runs through those joints, and gets held in the stone bed underneath until the ground can soak it up on its own schedule. The water goes down instead of running off toward the street. The EPA has a good plain-English rundown of how green infrastructure like permeable pavement manages stormwater, and it matches what I see on job sites.
Why this isn’t just a gimmick around Round Rock
Two reasons come up over and over out here. First is our clay soil — it doesn’t drink water fast, so a normal driveway sheds every drop of a storm toward the street, or worse, back toward your own foundation. A permeable drive catches that water and lets it percolate through slowly instead of sending it downhill in a rush. Second, some of the newer subdivisions and the stricter municipal codes around here count impervious surface against your lot — pave over too much of your yard with solid concrete and you can bump into a coverage limit. Permeable paving doesn’t get counted the same way. I’ve done driveways in newer communities like Teravista where that lot-coverage math is exactly why the homeowner called me instead of just wanting a nicer-looking drive.
What it costs, and where the money actually goes
I won’t sugarcoat the price. Here’s how the two options stack up on a straightforward job:

The extra cost isn’t the pavers themselves, it’s the hole. A permeable driveway needs that 12-to-18-inch reservoir of washed, open-graded stone laid down in careful lifts, sometimes with a fabric liner wrapped around it, instead of the 4 to 6 inches of standard base under a normal slab. That’s a lot more digging, a lot more rock, and a crew that actually understands how the layers work together — get the base wrong and the whole point of the system is gone. The maintenance nobody mentions until it’s too late
Here’s where I lose people. A permeable driveway only works as long as those joints stay open, and joints clog. Dust, grass clippings, the fine silt our Texas storms carry — it all settles in over a few years and seals the surface shut. You’ve got to vacuum out the joints or pressure-flush them every year or two to keep the system draining the way it’s supposed to. Skip that upkeep and you’ve paid permeable-paver prices for a driveway that now sheds water just like plain concrete would have, for a lot less money. I tell every homeowner the same thing before I pour a stone of it: if you’re not going to keep up the joints, don’t buy the system.
How I decide whether to build one for a customer
If someone’s got a real runoff problem, a lot-coverage restriction, or they genuinely want to send water back into the ground instead of down the storm drain, permeable paving is a good tool and I’ll build it happily. If their driveway already drains fine and they just want a nice-looking surface, they’re paying a big premium for something they don’t need — a plain concrete slab or a standard non-permeable paver job will do the same visual work for a lot less. Be honest with yourself about whether you’ve actually got that river running through your yard, or whether you don’t, and the right answer usually shows itself pretty quick.
Questions people ask me on the job
Does permeable paving even work on Round Rock’s clay soil? It works, but with a caveat. Because our clay drains slowly, the system leans hard on that deep stone reservoir to hold water while the ground underneath soaks it up on its own time, so the base has to be sized for our actual rainfall and our actual soil. A crew that doesn’t account for slow clay infiltration will build you a system that backs up in a hard storm instead of draining it.
Is permeable paving worth it compared to just repouring concrete? Only if you’ve got a drainage problem or a coverage restriction to solve. At $18 to $30 per square foot installed against $10 to $15 for standard concrete, you’re paying a real premium, and that premium buys you a functioning stormwater system, not a nicer-looking driveway. If your current drive already handles water fine, a straight concrete replacement is the more sensible move.
What’s the upkeep on a permeable driveway once it’s in? Plan on vacuuming or flushing the joints every one to two years so silt and debris don’t seal them shut. It’s not a big job, but it’s not a “pour it and forget it” surface either — skip the maintenance and you’ll lose the drainage you paid for within a few seasons.
